Our guests tell us visiting the Osa Wildlife Sanctuary is a welcome counterpoint to the Golfo Dulce Eco Tour, providing an interesting ‘terrestrial’ variation to an aquatic tour experience. In one tour, you will receive an informative, guided tour of the Golfo Dulce where you will search for dolphins, swim, plane board, and snorkel the reefs (when and where conditions permit), PLUS tour one of the more interesting and worthwhile animal sanctuary projects in Costa Rica. This wildlife sanctuary is located in the foothills of the Piedras Blancas National Park, making it only accessable by boat. The sanctuary’s remote location allows for the “soft-release” of rescued animals right into the surrounding rainforest!

Changing Tide Tours partners with Finca Saladero to bring you a unique, all-in-one tour!

Your day will start with a Dolphin and Eco tour of the Golfo Dulce. We will make our way across to the North-East side of the Golfo Dulce along the rugged coast of Piedras Blancas National Park. As we cross the Gulf we will look to encounter Bottlenose Dolphin, the Pan Tropical spotted Dolphins (the pod numbering 100-300+), Rays, Turtles, the Pelagic Sea Snake, Birds and when in season, Whales and Whale Sharks.

Mid-morning we will arrive at Finca Saladero near the Esquinas River where you will join with Harvey and Susan for a guided hike through their Tropical Gardens and then into the Primary Rainforest. (with 3 different trails from Mild to Medium difficulty, we can accommodate most physical levels).

See huge hardwood trees with massive root structures and vines while learning about the different levels of primary rainforest and their importance for our survival. Look for animals, insects, and birds while learning of the diversity and symbiotic relationships between plants and animals. As you end your hike by the beach you can participate in learning how to de-husk, open and scrape out a coconut to enjoy the fresh coconut and juice.

We then enjoy a delightful beachside lunch accompanied with homemade natural juices – araza, guanabana , cas, tamirindo or lemongrass tea before boarding the boat and heading back down the coast with a stop at one of our reefs for snorkeling and swimming. We then head back across the Golfo Dulce for a tour into a Mangrove/Estuary with a lesson on their importance to the environment along with bird watching and caiman/crocodile spotting.

You will end your day back in Puerto Jimenez at approximately 2:30 pm, having experienced multiple tours in one day.

All tours are guided by a bilingual guide, English and Spanish. We have a fully licensed local boat captain and provide water and fruit snacks while on board. We can also offer lunch if requested (at Cacao beach, another smaller beach in Piedras Blancas National Park, or fresh ceviche served on board). Anything else you would want just let us know, we can be very flexible!
Contact Finca Exotica Eco Lodge today to find out which boat tour option would be best for your vacation, as well as rates depending on your tour choice and group size. Since the tours leave from Puerto Jimenez, plan to have your boat tour on the first or last day of being on the Osa Peninsula to avoid travelling back and forth between this small quaint town and Carate Beach where Finca Exotica is located.

The dolphins await you!

What do I need to bring?

We provide fresh drinking water and fruits. You can bring anything you’d like, especially if picky eaters or special diets.

Be fully prepared to guard against sunburn, the sun in the tropics is very intense. There is shade on the boat, but glare reflects right on in. Sunglasses (polarized will give you the optimal experience), hats, towels and cover-ups are needed, even in the shade. It is usually best to put SPF 30+ sunscreen on before you leave your hotel, and again while on your adventure. No spray-on sunscreens please! They over-spray all over the boat becoming a safety hazard, or land on others who may not be appreciative! Please use eco-friendly sunscreen when possible, we do not want to damage the beautiful reefs.

We supply snorkel gear, but its fine to bring your own equipment if you have it, ensuring you a good fit.

That´s a lot of information so here is a breakdown of what you should bring:

Swim suit, Towel, Sunglasses, Camera, Binoculars, Hat, Sunblock, Sandals,Food & special beverages

* Please note, if visiting the animal sanctuary, you will also want to bring some insect repellent along to apply before docking.
